RCC Mourns the Loss of Rev. Dr. Michael Haynes

The Roxbury Community College community is deeply saddened by the loss of Rev. Dr. Michael Haynes. Rev. Dr. Haynes was the Senior Minister of the historic Twelfth Baptist Church where he led the congregation, for 40 years, until retirement in 2004. Rev. Dr. Haynes also served this community as a Massachusetts State Representative and later as a member of the State Parole Board. Rev. Dr. Haynes’ deep commitment to the youth in his community was an integral part of his leadership in both the spiritual and political sectors. With heavy hearts, we part with our beloved brother; a good man who has left an indelible legacy in his community.

Michael Haynes and Dr. Roberson Stem labDr. Valerie Roberson, president of RCC, gave Rev. Dr. Haynes a tour of RCC in late August. The RCC Foundation is currently planning a fundraiser to establish Haynes Family endowed scholarships; and, Rev. Dr. Haynes’ son, Abdi Ali, worked with Dr. Roberson to arrange a visit with his father, to tour the campus.

“I am grateful that Rev. Dr. Haynes took the time to meet with me and learn more about the College before his passing,” says Dr. Valerie Roberson. “I look forward to celebrating his legacy by establishing endowed scholarships in his family name.”

The Haynes family has enriched the Roxbury community for many years. We join the Roxbury community in extending thoughts of comfort to the Haynes family. Rev. Dr. Haynes and the entire Haynes family made Boston a better place. Rev. Dr. Haynes was as a wonderful and gentle soul who will forever remain in our hearts.
