After School for Educators Seminar

Please join Roxbury Community College for a free "After School for Educators" Seminar on Tuesday, June 23 from 3-5 pm. Open to all educators. Please share with your schools or organizations.
We have two very special guest speakers who also happen to be son and father, respectively:
  • Steve Gross - Chief Playmaker of Life is good® Kids Foundation
  • Herb Gross - Math Educator with over 50 years of teaching experience in diverse settings ranging from Central Prison's Death Row in Raleigh, North Carolina to MIT's Center for Advanced Engineering Study
  • Dr. Valerie Roberson, RCC President, will serve as the moderator.

Guest Speaker: Steve Gross
End your day on a high note as Steve Gross opens up our afternoon seminar. Steve Gross, M.S.W. is the Founder and Chief Playmaker of the Life is good® Playmakers, a 501(c)(3) public charity. Steve's extensive career shows his dedication to some of our most vulnerable children through the utilization of joyful play to promote healthy development in children facing the most challenging circumstances. We could all benefit from Steve's insight and knowledge not just in working directly with children, but in bringing that joy, compassion, and optimism in the classroom and/or the workplace.

Guest Speaker: Herb Gross

Herb Gross is the second highlight of our "After School for Educators" seminar as he discusses a shift in mindset to "math as a second language." His mission is to take the fear out of learning math, as this math phobia so many students face creates challenges that they struggle with and impacts multiple facets of their learning experience. Herb's life work as a math educator has led him to create and share free material beneficial to teachers, school administrators, parents/guardians, and students. What Herb does is replace complicated mathematical concepts with one or more simpler concepts that are easier to understand and hard to forget. With math being the key foundation to so many subjects beyond just math, it's imperative to address math phobia early on. As Herb puts it, "If we were to view mathematics as a game, we would find that too many students are working at the game rather than playing it." Join us to learn how Herb encourages students to "play" math, rather than dread "working" math, and how you can carry these strategies into your own classrooms to benefit students utilizing Herb's free video series.

The seminar will conclude with Q&A for both Steve and Herb.
Light refreshments will be served.
