What is online learning

Online Education is a general term for computer-enhanced learning in and outside of a classroom, although it is often extended to include the use of mobile technologies such as PDAs and MP3 players. It may include the use of web-based teaching materials and hypermedia in general, multimedia CD-ROMs, web sites, discussion boards, collaborative software, e-mail, blogs, wikis, computer aided assessment, educational animation, simulations, games, learning management software, electronic voting systems and more, with possibly a combination of different methods being used.
There are four major categories of online learning you may experience at Roxbury Community College:

  • Distance Courses (or Distance Learning): A course designed and taught entirely online, free from the traditional constraints of time and place of a classroom. Students work online (from home, work, or a computer lab) - accessing course material through the Internet. All that is required is a reliable computer, an Internet connection, and an e-mail account.
  • Hybrid courses: A course designed for online and face-to-face (FTF) classroom instruction. For example, rather than meet in class two or three times per week, you may only meet once or twice and then attend online for the remainder of class hours.
  • Web-enhanced courses: A course designed where the course content, syllabi, communication tools and exams are all provided in an online environment, while students continue to meet in a traditional classroom setting.
  • Companion courses: A course designed and taught entirely online, but used in a classroom setting.
