Executive Assistant and Occupations in the Field of Medicine

Roxbury Community College has partnered with Career Step, an online school offering career-focused education designed to help students quickly enter the workforce. Career Step is committed to providing the best online education experience by incorporating interactive learning tools such as hands-on practice, videos, games, forums, and chat rooms into its curriculum. Students also have one-on-one access to instructors who have years of experience actually working in the positions students are training for. After graduation, students have access to comprehensive graduate resources such as resume reviews, interview tips and tutorials, and new job opening notifications to help them successfully transition from education to employment.

Medical Coding and Billing

The NEW Professional Medical Coding and Billing program was designed by leading industry experts to prepare students for the new ICD-10 code set, and this training is used by some of the largest and most respected healthcare organizations in the country. The course prepares students to pass the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exams and covers healthcare information management, reimbursement methodologies, and biomedical sciences, among other topics. ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes are taught in an extensive practical section, giving students valuable hands-on experience. In addition to one-on-one instructor support and personalized graduate support, students receive textbooks, a complete set of industry code books, and access to an online reference library.

Medical Transcription and Editing

Approved by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), the Medical Transcription program helps students gain the specific skills needed to successfully begin a medical transcription career. Students learn medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare documentation, among other topics, as well as developing and practicing their typing and listening skills on hundreds of authentic, employer-provided dictations from a variety of specialties. In addition to one-on-one support from experienced instructors throughout the course and personalized graduate support after graduation, students receive ten textbooks, a transcription foot pedal, a 15-month membership to AHDI, and a 15-month subscription to an online reference library.

Pharmacy Technician

Students are introduced to pharmacology, pharmacy calculations, physiology and pathophysiology.
Familiarize yourself with medication preparation, medication dispensing, drug interactions, pharmacy law, drug classes, liability and much more.

Executive Assistant

Designed to help students gain the software and business skills needed to succeed in the modern office environment, the Executive Assistant program focuses on the Microsoft Office 2010 application suite and office management skills. Students learn to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint in addition to strengthening their typing skills and studying office procedures and communication. Upon graduation, students are prepared to earn the Microsoft Office Specialist Master certification, strengthening their resumes and proving their software skills to employers. In addition to one-on-one instructor support and personalized graduate support, students receive eleven textbooks and a business writing style guide.

Medical Billing

The Medical Billing program helps students develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in healthcare reimbursement. The program focuses on documentation and procedures and includes hands-on exercises that allow students to apply what they learn. Students learn medical terminology, documentation and confidentiality, medical coding basics, and patient billing and collections as well as specialized considerations such as the ICD-10 code set and X12 5010 billing system. In addition to one-on-one support from experienced instructors throughout the course and access to personalized graduate support after graduation, students receive five textbooks and a one-year membership to the American Medical Billing Association.

ICD-10 for ICD-9 Coders

The ICD-10 FastTrack course prepares medical coders to use the new ICD-10 code set, which all healthcare facilities and physicians' offices must begin using October 1, 2014. The course assumes students are already familiar with the principles of medical coding as well as medical terminology, pharmacology, and basic anatomy and pathophysiology. Students will learn ICD-10 specific advanced anatomy/physiology as well as advanced pathophysiology and ICD-10 coding with guided hands-on exercises that allow students to gain real-world experience with the new code set. In addition to one-on-one support from AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainers throughout the course, students receive several industry code books.

Enrollment for Online Courses through RCC is ongoing. Students are offered the flexibility to start these programs at a time convenient for them. Students who wish to take online courses should be motivated self-learners, self-directed, and familiar with using computers.
