THE TRANSFER PROCESS

Are you planning to transfer to a four-year institution after graduating from RCC?

Where do I begin?
img

  • Do some research to locate colleges that offer the major leading to your career goal (Career services 3-207) by going online to access each college website.

    You will find information:

    • Applications (Transfer applications)
    • Transfer Admission deadlines
    • Transfer Admission open house dates or tours (Recommended if possible)
    • Majors (information about them)
    • Degree program requirements
    • Catalogs with course descriptions
    • Information specific to transfer students

  • Create a list of about three colleges (four for nursing students).  Choose at least one safety school where you are sure you’ll meet admissions standards.  Safety schools will be included within the guaranteed admissions programs at RCC such as Mass Transfer or Joint Admissions.  Visit RCC’s Transfer Center (3-219) for a current list of Mass Transfer and Joint Admissions guaranteed admissions majors at RCC.

Applying to a four year college/university

If you have earned between 15 and 30 college-level credits, most colleges will consider you a transfer student.

If you have below 30 college-level credits, many colleges will require that you submit high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores along with your application.

If you have 30 college-level credits or above, many colleges will not require that you submit high school transcripts or SAT or ACT scores along with your application.

When applying to the four-year college you must submit:

  • Text Box: A completed application form. (Online, through mail or in person)

    • College/University application
    • *Common Application (online only) Enables the student to send one application to multiple schools.
    • Joint Admissions or Mass Transfer application-Applications only accepted at state universities.

  • An application fee or fee waiver. Fee waivers are available in Transfer Services, 3-219. Students must bring in completed application materials in order to receive the waiver.
  •

  • Your official RCC academic transcript.  You must request this from the Registrar’s Office, Administration Building, by filling out the Transcript Request Form.

  • Official transcripts from all other colleges you have attended.
  •

  • An official high school transcript or copy of your G.E.D. certificate.  The one on file in the RCC Admissions Department cannot be used. (In some instances)

  • An essay (see specific applications for this)

  • Other documents, such as letters of recommendation.  Read the application carefully.  Instructions are clearly stated and must be followed.

  •

  • Roxbury Community College’s CEEB code is 003740

Once a decision has been made, the Admissions Department will send you:

  • A letter of acceptance, conditional acceptance or rejection.  They will ask for a deposit (usually between $150 and $300) to secure your place.  If you have a financial aid award or anticipate one being processed soon, you may be able to negotiate using this for the deposit. RCC cannot have this fee waived.
  •

  • A credit evaluation listing the credits accepted and how they will be calculated toward a degree.

Transferring and Financial Aid

You must also:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.gov.  (You must get the college/university school code to put on the fafsa) Reminder: Complete the FAFSA early!
  •

  • Complete the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Financial Aid Profile Form.  This is an application for student aid funds.  Many private colleges used this to determine eligibility for institutionally based scholarships and other types of aid.  The fees are approximately $25 to process (which includes one report) and $16 for each additional report.  Register on-line for an application at http://profileonline.collegeboard.com or call 1-800-778-6888.

It is up to you to find out the costs of attending and compare the amount of your award with the cost for tuition, fees, and other charges.  The award may or may not cover the costs of attending, and you may have “unmet need”.   You are expected to make up this difference from your savings or from other sources.

FINDING scholarships

  • Apply for RCC Foundation Scholarships.  Available in 3-207 or 3-219.  Complete the application and brief essay and have a faculty member sign your application.

  • Participate in the RCC Transfer Scholarship process for graduating students if the school you are applying to has a scholarship for transfer students by filing the form, an essay, a transcript and a faculty letter of recommendation by the posted deadline. Visit the RCC Transfer Center, 3-219 for application materials for these scholarships.  (Current list is below)

  • Utilize the services of the T.E.R.I located in the basement of The Boston Public Library, Copley Square.  http://www.tericollegeplanning.org.

    T.E.R.I will help you:
