Essentials for Online Learners

There are two categories of skills you need to succeed in an online course: study skills and technical skills.

Study Skills:

  • Self motivation
  • Good time management
  • Good written communication skills
  • Strong reading skills
  • Persistence
  • Diligence
  • Initiative
  • Patience

Although this attribute is not a required skill, a good sense of humor will take you a long way!

Technical Skills:

  • Using an Internet browser
  • Sending and receiving email
  • Sending and receiving file attachments
  • Cutting and pasting text
  • Downloading applications
  • Managing files (creating, saving, copying, moving, and deleting)
  • Creating file directories
  • Performing searches
  • Performing basic word processing

If you are still unsure if online education is right for you, take the Online Education Assessments.

The online courses focus on academic content and are not designed to teach you how to use the Moodle or the other required technical skills.

Environmental Factors

Another important factor to consider before taking an online course is your environment. To help you succeed in an online course you must have the following:

  • A reliable email account and service
  • Unrestricted access to a computer with a reliable internet connection

All RCC students get a FREE roxbury.edu e-mail account. This email is used by the college administration and faculty to send all official information. To find out what your email address is and activate it, click here. If you would like to forward your roxbury.edu email to an already established personal email account, click here.

If you do not have unrestricted access to a computer, consider purchasing your own computer through the Computer Discount Programs offered to RCC.
