History and Mission:

Through a generous donation from Joan and Howard Resnikoff, the walls of the lobby of the Media Arts Center were refinished to accommodate the exhibition of artwork. In tandem with the art rooms, music practice studios, dance studios and performance center, the Joan Resnikoff Gallery has helped RCC’s Media Arts Center become a vibrant arts nexus within the Roxbury and greater Boston communities.

Our mission is to present challenging and diverse work that represents the broad spectrum of creativity, addresses political issues, expresses individuality and identity and is above all courageous and beautiful. The gallery is an academic and community space showing the work of local and international artists consistent with the college’s mission “to facilitate the success of our students in achieving their educational goals.” Since 2009, when visual artist and educator Mirta Tocci joined us as curator, we have showcased the work of noted Boston-based African American artists, such as Lou Jones, Don West, Craig Bailey, Destiny Palmer, Stephen Hamilton, and Carlos Byron. We have presented the work of Latino and Hispanic artists, such as eight Colombian artists from Colectivo Amarillo, Argentine artists Óscar Astromujoff, Ferran Giménez, and Alberto Fregenal, Cuban artists Martha Jiménez and Gabriel Gutiérrez, and Puerto Rican artist Anabel Vazquez, as resources for RCC students enrolled in ESL and Spanish language classes during annual Hispanic Heritage Month and beyond. The works of photojournalist Kelly Creedon on the home foreclosure crisis and the Armenian painter Hope Ricciardi on the Armenian genocide have also been featured.Additionally, we have presented exhibitions with community partners such as The Medicine Wheel, Violence Transformed, Emerson College, the Dana Farber Cancer Center and the Faith-Based Cancer Disparities Network.
