Entering his 12th year at the helm of Roxbury Community College’s cheerleading team, Lance Bembury is the school’s most tenured coach.
Bembury started RCC’s cheerleading program in 1995 with five students and no budget and has since built it into a force to be reckoned with at local and regional competitions and an important and highly respected component of the athletic department.
Bembury’s recent accomplishments include organizing and hosting RCC’s first school-sponsored cheerleading competition -- called the Cheerleading Invitational -- and leading his teams to impressive finishes at numerous high profile competitions, including a second place finish at the East Elite 2007 competition in March and the Spirit Central Spring Challenge competition last April.
Prior to coaching RCC, he was an assistant cheerleading coach at Dorchester High School for five years and the head cheerleading coach at Hyde Park High School for one year. He played a vital role in restarting Hyde Park’s cheerleading program after it had been eliminated from the school budget, and he led Dorchester High to a first place finish in the BIV 10 Cheerleading Competition sponsored by Michael Bivens of the New Edition singing group. After leaving his coaching post at RCC, he went on to become a judge for the BIV 10 competition.
Bembury also holds several unique distinctions, including being the first male cheerleader at Hyde Park High School and at RCC, a former captain of RCC’s cheerleading team, and recipient of a cheerleader of the year award at RCC.
Bembury, a Randolph resident, works as an administrative assistant for the Department of Mental Health for the state of Massachusetts. He is a member of the University Cheerleading Association.
Last Year’s Cheerleading Team
2006-07 Team Continued Long Tradition of Competing and Supporting School Sports
The 2006-07 season was successful for the Roxbury Community College Tigers cheerleading Team. It continued its long tradition of cheering the school’s sports teams on to victory and competed in local and regional competitions.
After years of cheering for the school’s baseball and basketball teams, the popular 10-member squad added the soccer team into the mix this year as part of an ongoing effort to support more teams and programs. It also organized and hosted its own competition for the first time and earned impressive second place finishes at the East Elite 2007 competition in March and the Spirit Central Spring Challenge competition last April.
By organizing its own competition, called the Cheerleading Invitational, the team sought to raise the profile of its own program while showcasing the talents of local high school cheerleading teams. Proceeds from the event, held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, were used to augment Roxbury Community College’s Athletic Department budget.
Undeterred by having only four members of last year’s team returning for the 2007-08 school year, Coach Lance Bembury plans to enter his squad in several major competitions during the coming season, including the New England Cheer & Dance competition in November 2007 and the National Cheerleading Association competition in March of 2008.
Returning team members include sophomores Ginnette Avevedo, Jordana Chaney, Sakle Howell, and Mark Hardin. Rolling tryouts will run throughout the 2007-08 school year, with the first one planned for September.
