After a successful first season helping Roxbury Community College begin building a top-notch track & field program, Coach Westley Ellis is ready to put lessons learned last year to good use this year.
Ellis performed above expectations last season, his first at the helm of a college program, by guiding RCC’s track teams to impressive performances at numerous competitions and two sprinters to National Junior College Track & Field Coaches Association Academic All American recognition.
With almost an entire compliment of runners returning from last year and the anticipated addition of several standout recruits, Ellis expects this year’s team will be even more exciting and accomplished.
Before coming to RCC, Ellis held several positions in Alabama, including working as assistant coach of Alabama State University’s men’s and women’s track teams, head coach of Montgomery Academy‘s track program and head coach of the Montgomery Thoroughbreds youth track club. Montgomery Academy won a state sectional cross-country title under his direction.
Ellis, a Dorchester native, was himself a standout runner in high school and college, having earned numerous individual awards and been a central figure on teams that earned national attention.
As a junior at Dorchester High school, he astonished teammates and competitors by winning the mile and two-mile indoor and outdoor championships in his first year running competitively. As a senior, he was city champion in the indoor mile, runner up in the outdoor mile, State-Class runner up in the indoor 1000-meter dash, All State runner up in the indoor 1000-yard dash, and he qualified to compete in the outdoor 800-meter dash in national competition.
At Alabama State, Ellis was part of a championship cross-country team and earned Southwestern Athletic Conference All American honors for his efforts in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run.
In Addition to coaching RCC’s track & field program, Ellis also works as a swimming instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association and camp director at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. He and his wife live in Dorchester with their children.
