Closing Ceremony – May 2011
Our first group of mentees and mentors successfully completed an academic year long mentoring relationship. We came together to officially recognize the hard work and dedication of all of our matches and each mentor and mentee individually. Certificates and mementos were given out between stories of gratitude, accomplishments, and best wishes. Congratulations to all!
Mentoring for Success goes to Six Flags New England! – May 2011
For many of our mentees and some of our mentors, this trip out to Six Flags New England in Agawam, MA was an activity highlight of the year! Despite the overcast weather, the day turned out to be a lot of fun with good company, food, and many rides.
Healthy Living Challenge – April 2011
Both mentors and mentees met for our meeting in April for an engaging Healthy Living Challenge. Mentoring matches competed for prizes as they took a Healthy Living Quiz and were able to learn a lot from our guest speaker (and mentor!) Flo Russo, Head Athletic Trainer at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Flo challenged our ideas about what being “healthy” really means and engaged the audience to think about their own habits and routines. In addition, everyone received a pedometer and participated in a Pedometer Challenge to see who could walk the most steps over a 4-week period.
Trip to the Museum of Science – April 2011
Highlights to the Museum of Science included the live butterfly exhibit and the “RACE: Are We So Different?” exhibit. Most of us also checked our blood pressures and took some interesting interactive quizzes.
Trip to the Museum of Fine Arts – March 2011
We were able to pack a lot into our visit and saw everything from a collection of Buddhas to African art, historical pieces and a fashion exhibit, lots of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, mummies, modern art, and photography exhibits!
Holiday Toy Drive – Christmas 2010
Thanks to the generosity and support from RCC, Mentoring for Success was able to make a holiday donation to ABCD, Inc. (Action for Boston Community Development, Inc). Through donations and fundraising, we worked together to provide at least 45 children with a Christmas present!
Hygiene Kit Drive – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2010
Mentoring for Success hosted a hygiene item drive in collaboration with the Highland Street Corps Ambassadors of Mentoring. We were able to contribute 70 sticks of deodorant and some miscellaneous hygiene items!
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Highland Street Corps hosted an event at the Worcester Youth Center to create 300 hygiene kits. These kits were donated to three homeless shelters across Massachusetts.
Thanksgiving Senior Citizen Luncheon – November 2010
This year marked the 14th Annual Senior Citizen Luncheon on November 19th, 2010 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. RCC faculty, staff, and students volunteer to help serve and make the experience a little brighter for the seniors attending. We are proud of our mentors and mentees who volunteered this year!
