2 LARGE DISPLAYS DRAW INTEREST
On display
in the RCC Library, July 30 to September 15, 2004, was an exhibit entitled El
Congresista: Joe Moakley en El
Salvador. It was on loan from The John
Joseph Moakley Archive and Institute, Suffolk University. This traveling exhibit focused on the civil
war in El Salvador and its impact on the Salvadoran people through photographs
and documents drawn from the Moakley Archive’s collection of materials. The exhibit explored the late congressman’s
growing involvement with Salvadoran refugees and citizens and his efforts to
bolster democracy.
On August
31, 2004, there was an open house in the library in conjunction with the
exhibit co-sponsored by Congressman Michael Capuano and
attended by representative of the Moakley Archive, college staff and members of
the community interested in Congressman Moakley’s work. Shirley Leslie of the President’s Office
handled most coordination for the Moakley display and event.
Minority
Role Models
On display during September: Minority
Role Models in Science, Mathematics, Technology and Engineering - A Traveling
Exhibit.
The TTT Mentor Program of Cambridge, MA created this exhibit to encourage minority students
to explore careers in the sciences. The
display included large pictures of eighteen successful professionals in the
Boston area, including Dr. Phillip L. Clay,
Chair of the RCC Board of Trustees. The
TTT Mentor Program provides mentors and other activities for low-income
children in the Greater Boston area.
Activities are organized to enhance traditional teaching and learning in
the sciences and to encourage students, especially girls, to choose a career
goal in science.

Students
seeking reference help from a professional librarian no longer have to hunt in
one of the library offices. Instead,
they can now go to the new reference desk, located close to the entrance and across
from the circulation desk. By
definition, people entering a library are looking for something. In many cases that something is information
which they are not quite sure how to find.
It is hoped that making the masters-degree-trained professional librarians
much more accessible will increase students’ ability to find information that
they need for course work. The library
has lacked a reference desk for 10 years.
The present one could not have been installed without the help of staffs
from the Facilities and Information Technology departments.
The reference desk will be staffed about 50% of the time, during the
busy mornings and at evening hours.

LIBRARY #1 IN STUDENT POLL
In the
spring of 2004, 250 RCC students completed a poll ranking the 15 RCC offices
and services. The Student Government
Association sponsored the poll. There were two criteria: usage and satisfaction. The library came in first in usage; 94% of
students surveyed said they used the library.
In satisfaction, 83.1% of students said they were satisfied with library
services, a close second behind The Learning Center, ranked at 83.5%. Jerome Dean, Director of the Office of Institutional Research, analyzed and compiled the poll
results. He created a third category,
positive impact, found by multiplying the usage percentile times the
satisfaction percentile. In the final
report, Jerome noted that “(t)he library, with an impact score of 78.2% has the
most positive impact on students’ perception of RCC in general.”
Library
staff members are naturally gratified by these results. On the other hand, 17% unsatisfied is
unacceptably high and the library has to do a better job at refining its
customer service techniques.
The whole
report entitled “Spring 2004 Student Opinion Survey Results” is available at
the library reference desk.

NEW BOOKS
The library purchased and processed nearly 300 new books and audiovisual items during the spring and summer. (See list below.) This is equivalent to about 10 bookshelves full and represents the biggest acquisition in two years. Most of the titles match topics that students have chosen for research papers over the last 18 months and are likely to be in high demand.
