Roxbury, MA. (August 31, 2007) -- Roxbury Community College (RCC) graduate Antonio Francis and sophomore Justin Stephens are the school’s latest student-athletes to earn Academic All American recognition from the National Junior College (NJCAA) Track & Field Coaches Association. The pair – both sprinters on RCC’s track team – earned the distinction for their stellar classroom performance during the last semester of the 2006-2007 school year.
Only students with grade point averages of 3.4 or better on a scale of 4.0 are eligible for recognition under NJCAA rules. Francis finished the semester with a 3.48 grade point average while Stephens finished with a 3.78 average. It was the first time earning the honor for both men.
Athletic Director Keith McDermott lauded the pair for their hard work.
“Our student athletes emphasize academics and athletics -- its part of our mission and we preach it at every opportunity,” said McDermott. “We are extremely proud of these two young men. They are shining examples for others to emulate.”
Earlier this year, Francis, a Dorchester resident, earned All American honorable mention recognition in three separate events at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Nationals held in Maryland. He plans to major in Business Administration at the University of Massachusetts next year.
Stephens, also a Dorchester resident, plans to continue majoring in Computer Science and running track for RCC during the 2007-2008 school year.
