Overview of Nursing Program (ADN & PNC)

Beginning in Fall 2017, Roxbury Community College (RCC) nursing program will have a state-of-the-art simulated hospital which includes: a Labor & Delivery suite, pediatric & adult patient rooms, OR, trauma room, radiology, exam rooms, general simulation and skills areas.  Also effective in fall 2017, RCC nursing program is moving to its new space which will provide nursing students with smart classrooms, a new computer lab, and student lounge.  RCC through grant support offers students high, mid, and low level fidelity simulation to augment their class and clinical education.

Roxbury Community College is offering a stackable program to students.  All students who are accepted into RCC nursing program are admitted to the AD nursing program.  Students by the end of their 2nd semester must decide whether they want to continue on the ADN track or the PNC track where they will receive a Practical Nursing Certificate after successful completion of a 3rd semester and final semester. The Licensed Practical Nurse may then choose to return to the program and have the opportunity to be advanced placed in the third semester of the ADN program.  LPNs graduating from other academic programs who wish to advance place in our 2nd or 3rd semester may be invited to do so, if they successfully complete the NLN NACE exams 1,2,3 with a score of 75 or more.  

Overview of Associate Degree Nursing Program

By the end of the nursing program, the graduate will be prepared to:

  1. Apply the nursing process and EBP to provide high quality, safe patient care to culturally diverse clients with actual and potential common health problems throughout the life cycle.
  2. Communicate therapeutically with clients, families, and health care team members to assist in the achievement of desired outcomes.
  3. Promote the health of culturally diverse clients and their families throughout the life cycle through the implementation of effective teaching plans.
  4. Collaborate with other health care professionals to develop and implement health promotion, disease prevention, illness management and adaptation through to end of life care.
  5. Uses leadership and management skills (including quality improvement strategies) that show an awareness of, and responsiveness to, the larger context of the health care system to provide, continually reevaluate and improve patient care (systems-based practice - Adapted from ACGME & NOF & QSEN).
  6. Demonstrate professional attributes and accountability within the practice of associate-degree nursing.
  7. Utilize clinical reasoning skills to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to diverse clients and their families across a variety of settings.
  8. Use evidence based information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making. (QSEN)

Students with little or no health care experience are eligible to apply for admission to the ADN Program. Educational mobility for licensed practical nurses is offered through the Advanced Placement Option. The Program graduate is awarded an Associate in Science degree and is then eligible to apply to the Board of Nursing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses.

  • Job placement: As of 2016, Roxbury Community College Job placement rate within a year of graduation is 89%
  • NCLEX Pass RATE: For 2016, the first time pass rate for RCC ADN Graduates was 74%
  • Continuing Education: 94% of ADN Graduates reported being enrolled in an RN-BSN program or plans to enroll within a year 

Overview of Practical Nursing Certificate Program

Roxbury Community College Stackable program provides flexibility for students within the program during and post-graduation.  Students who successfully complete the PNC and licensure (LPN) and meet the advanced placement criteria are invited to return to the 3rd semester of the ADN program and be finished in 2 semesters.

By the end of practical nursing certificate program, the graduate will be prepared to:

  • Demonstrate ability to safely perform basic therapeutic and preventative nursing procedures in providing individualized care of clients with common, well-defined, health problems in selected health care settings.
  • Utilize the nursing process, evidence-based practice, and information technology in the care of culturally diverse clients with common, well-defined health problems. 
  • Utilize goal-directed communication methods with clients, families and health care team members.
  • Promote the health of culturally diverse clients through the application of basic educational strategies.  
  • Demonstrate professional and leadership attributes within the practice of practical nursing.
  • Utilize clinical reasoning skills to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to diverse clients and their families across a variety of settings. 

Roxbury Community College PN Graduates:

  • 2016 NCLEX Pass Rate:  80%
  • Job placement for 2016 graduates is reported at 100%
  • Continuing Education: 67% are currently enrolled or plan to enroll in an ADN program within the next 6 months.
