Introduction to Alt/ Re Energy

Students enrolled in this course learn important information relative to electrical power generation through solar, wind, biomass, and hydro technologies. They learn the benefit of using these environmentally-friendly types of energy as opposed to the traditional energy sources. They are introduced to the basic concepts of wind and solar energy production and are acquainted with the technologies and devices in used today to produce wind and solar energy. This course also provides a hands-on opportunity for students through the use of various gadgets in the lab.

Basic Electricity for Alternative & Renewable Energy Professionals
CSA 815; Wed: 5:30-8:00PM; 8 weeks; $250
This course reviews the basic theory of electricity including AC/DC power, series and parallel circuitry applications and measurements within typical renewable energy systems. Students are also introduced to solar electrical components, including PV, inverters, controller, and different types of energy storage systems. This course is also designed to introduce students to basic renewable energy systems-- how they function and work. Electricians as well as other trade professionals seeking to be acquainted with the basics of the electrical circuitry as it applies to renewable energy are welcome. Tour of a local solar system is included.

Introduction to the Principles of Solar Thermal Applications

This course offers the basic theory and mechanics involved in the installation of solar thermal units. We will discuss the effects of solar energy in our daily lives and its various applications. There will be a site visit to provide some hands-on experience in installing a solar hot water heater. We will explore career options in this field, the future of the solar industry and its impact on our community.

Introduction to Green Roofs

The green/clean energy movement proposes to create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in various areas including green roofs. Green roofs, also known as vegetated roofs have become an important component of green building design and a means for energy conservation. In addition, it has the potential to create an oasis of plants, flowers, and other vegetations right in the middle of our cities and towns while protecting the roofs of our buildings and of our homes against the elements. Sign up for this course and learn the benefits and applications of commercial and residential green roof installations. This course also includes green roof site seeing and basic installation techniques.
