Terrence
A. Gomes, or "Terry" as he prefers to be called,earned
his Bachelor of Arts from Lincoln University and a
Master of Arts from Rhodes Island College.In 1979,
Gomes earned
a Doctor of Education from Nova University, with postdoctoral
studies at Harvard University's Institute for the Management
of Lifelong Education.
Dr. Gomes' professional career is punctuated by education from his earliest days as an instructor of Social Studies and Science in New Bedford, Massachusetts in the late sixties to his appointment as Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Roxbury Community College in 2002.
By the early seventies Gomes' leadership skills evidenced when he was appointed chair of one of Bristol Community College's largest departments, History and Social Sciences. In 1977, Dr. Gomes came to Roxbury Community College as the Assistant Dean of Faculty, where he was actively involved in the development of academic programs and policies, as well as, the implementation of academic standards.
During this period Gomes also served as the divisional chair
of Liberal Arts at Roxbury Community College. In 1979 Dr.
Gomes returned to Bristol Community College as Assistant
Dean of Academic Affairs where he was involved in every aspect
of the academic administration of the College. Three of Dr.
Gomes accomplishments that standout while at Bristol Community
College were the development of the college's first five-year
strategic plan, the implementation of the collective bargaining
agreement, and the creation of policies and procedures for
non-traditional academic programs.
In 1982 Dr. Gomes was
appointed Dean of Continuing Education at Massasoit Community
College. While at Massasoit Gomes held a variety of progressively
more responsible positions including: Dean of Faculty and
Instruction, Vice President of Faculty and Instruction, and
by 1999 was appointed Vice President of Institutional Planning
and Development. As the chief academic officer, Gomes was
responsible for the overall planning, development, coordination
and administration of all academic programs with a faculty
of more than 400 part-time and full-time faculty.
In the summer of 2002, Dr. Gomes was recruited to serve as
Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at
Roxbury Community
College. During his tenure as Interim Executive Vice President
Gomes provided overall leadership for curriculum development
and instruction, lead the college from an oral to a documented
policies and procedures, focused the college's decision-making
on data based decisions, increased the commitment to instructional
technology and distance learning.
Dr. Gomes has a strong commitment to the community serving
on a variety of community-based boards in southeastern
Massachusetts including the People's
Savings Bank of Brockton, Growing Mind Institute, Brockton
Economic Development Commission, Southeastern Massachusetts
Area Health Education Center, Brockton Savings Bank,
New Bedford Economic Development Commission, and the Massachusetts
Commission for Occupational Education.
